Agents of Shield returns this fall for their third season on ABC. It will loosely follow the “Secret Warriors” comic by Jonathan Hickman. Quake played a large role in that series and will likely do the same in the TV show. Season 2 of Shield amped up the excitement and introduced several new concepts to the MCU, especially the Inhumans. Let us see where Season 3 goes. Get your security clearances ready.

Marvel Studio Shake Up Like A Galactus Bender!

marvel

The Hollywood Reporter is..urm…reporting that there is a recent change of hands of sort regarding Marvel Studios, the film studio owned by Disney and has made over $8 Billion world wide from its comic book properties such as Iron Man, Captain America, and Squirrel Girl (just kidding, Squirrel Girl has not been released…yet). After what has been described as years of frustration, Kevin Feige, the Studio Chief and brains behind the success of Marvel Studios, is no longer reporting to the “infamously micromanaging Marvel Entertainment CEO Isaac “Ike” Perlmutter.” Instead, Feige will report directly to Disney Studio Chief Alan Horn. Perlmutter is like a Fox Studio exec: always meddling and unscrupulously cheap.  Feige being able to negotiate a way out of Perlmutters grubby hands and eyes is a wonderful situation for the studio as they now stand as tall as LucasFilm and Pixar Animation, both of whom are also owned by Disney and reports directly to Horn.

It seems like Feige has been orchestrating this for some time, venting his displeasure to Disney CEO Bob Iger and Horn earlier this summer. And I don’t blame him. There are stories of how horrible Perlmutter has been. Stories such as him catering Subways to Marvel movie events, wanting to write off Tony Stark in Captain America: Civil War, limiting patrons and reporters to only one soda a person, and having many feuds with Feige over the films. So getting out of the shadow of Perlmutter means a more relaxed and less thrifty environment. It also means that actors, directors, and craft services won’t be low balled during negotiations. There was a period in which none of the actors would return for Avengers: Age of Ultron due to Perlmutter not bumping their salaries after the success of the first Avengers. With Feige and Marvel Studios out of Perlmutter’s death grips, the studio might have more leeway and take more risks. Hopefully. The restructuring took affect last week:

“Marvel Studios is taking the next logical step in its integration with The Walt Disney Studios, joining Pixar and Lucasfilm in centralizing many of its film-related functions in Burbank, with Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige and co-president Louis D’Esposito continuing to lead the Marvel Studios team reporting to Walt Disney Studios Chairman Alan Horn,” a Disney spokesperson tells THR in a statement.”

Unfortunately, Perlmutter still runs the rest of the Marvel Enterprise, including the comics and television division. We can’t win it all but hey, it’s something.

‘Ice and the Sky’ premiere and closing ceremony, 68th Cannes Film Festival, France – 24 May 2015

Variety just broke the news that the formidable Mads Mikkelsen is in early talks for a role in Dr. Strange for Marvel. The role is hinted to be a villainous one alongside Chiwetel Ejiofor, who is set to play Baron Mordo. Benedict Cumberbatch stars as the titular Dr. Strange and Tilda Swinton plays the Ancient One, Strange’s mentor.

The role for Mikkelsen has not be revealed yet and they are still in talks but what other villain can he play? Mephisto? Shuma-Gorath? Or perhaps Dormammu? Mikkelsen is a great actor and this movie is shaping up to be a unique one. The movie released November of next year.

The lovely and academy award winning actress Marisa Tomei is currently the number one choice to play Aunt May in Marvel’s new “Spider-Man” movie. She has not accepted the offer yet, which was made last week according to Variety: “While insiders could not say where things stood in the deal-making process, they have added that an offer was made late last week for the Oscar-winning actress to join Tom Holland, who was recently tapped to play the web-slinging superhero.”

The film is expected to shoot next year so hopefully she accepts. I think she is a wonderful actress and am interested to see this take on Aunt May and young Peter Parker. Aunt May, along with Uncle Ben plays a vital role in Spider-Man’s life. They are his heart and soul. Peter Parker risks everything and wages his soul for his Aunt so this role is extremely important.

Elodie Yung is Elektra-fying!

Elodie-Yung-ELEKTRA

Marvel and Netlfix just recently announced that Elodie Yung, a French Cambodian actress who played Jinx in G.I. Joe Retaliation and holds a black belt in karate, will play Elektra in the second season of Daredevil. Elodie is a strong choice for Elektra with her background in martial arts but can she act? She has been in mostly french tv and movies and has been acting for over 10 years. This may be her first big American break through. Elodie joins Charlie Cox as Daredevil and John Bernthal as the Punisher. From Marvel’s Press release:

“Elodie Yung (“G.I. Joe: Retaliation,” “District 13: Ultimatum”) joins the next season of “Marvel’s Daredevil,” streaming only on Netflix in 2016!

Yung will play Elektra, a mysterious woman from Matt Murdock’s past whose dangerous and exotic ways may be more than he can handle. The first season of “Marvel’s Daredevil” made reference to Elektra, but now Yung will portray one of Daredevil’s fan-favorite characters. Elektra marks the most recent major addition to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, as she will join Jon Bernthal as Frank Castle in the upcoming season of the Netflix Original Series “Marvel’s Daredevil.”

“After a worldwide search,  we found in Elodie the perfect actress to embody both Elektra’s impressive and deadly physicality, as well as her psychological complexity,” said Executive Producer and Head of Marvel Television, Jeph Loeb. “Paired with Charlie as Matt Murdock, the two will bring one of the most beloved and tumultuous comic book relationships to life with all the accompanying sparks and spectacular action sequences the show is known for.””

Elektra Natchios was and still a strong presence in the Daredevil mythology. She was Matt’s college love who disappeared once her father was murdered and returned as an assassin who worked for Kingpin. She has a major moment with a yet to be cast Bullseye which I will not spoil but it devastated Matt. Regardless, seeing Elektra on screen is a joy and I cannot wait to watch Daredevil season two.

civilwaramazing-spider-man-2

In what is obvious news but now confirmed, Spidey will appear in Captain America: Civil War. In an length piece which includes interviews with Kevin Fiege, the mastermind behind the Marvel Cinematic Universe, The Hollywood Reporter confirms that Tom Holland, playing the wall crawler, will “report immediately to the set of the currently shooting Captain America: Civil War, which Marvel has scheduled for a May 6, 2016, release and in which the newest Spider-Man will make his first onscreen appearance.”

However, expect this to be a cameo and not a full on supporting role as Civil War is already packed with characters such as Cap himself, Antman, Black Widow, Falcon, Iron Man, Bucky, Scarlet Witch, Vision, Crossbones, and more importantly, Black Panther.

Its a good time to be a Marvel Fan.

Tom Holland Cast As Spider-Man! Jon Watts To Direct New Film!

main-qimg-b1b5563a9494ca4dcef85c884246d12ctomholland

Two relative unknowns as been giventhe task of bringing Spider-Man to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Tom Holland, of “The Impossible,” “Wolf Hall,” and the upcoming “In the Heart of the Sea,” will play Peter Parker and Jon Watts, who directed “Cop Car,” will helm the July 28, 2017 film. Spidey is also expected to appear in Captain America: Civil War. From the Marvel Press release:

“Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios are proud to announce that after a full worldwide casting search, Tom Holland will play Peter Parker/Spider-Man in the next Spider-Man film, in theaters in IMAX and 3D on July 28, 2017.  The film will be directed by Jon Watts, director of “Cop Car,” the upcoming thriller that made its debut earlier this year at the Sundance Film Festival.

Marvel and Sony Pictures, and producers Kevin Feige and Amy Pascal conducted an extensive search for both the actor and the director.  The studios and producers were impressed by Holland’s performances in “The Impossible,” “Wolf Hall,” and the upcoming “In the Heart of the Sea,” and by a series of complex screen tests.  Following Marvel’s tradition of working with the brightest next wave of directors, Watts also went through multiple meetings with Feige, Pascal, and the studio, before winning the job.

Commenting on the announcement, Tom Rothman, Sony Pictures Motion Pictures Group Chairman, said, “It’s a big day here at Sony. Kevin, Amy and their teams have done an incredible job.  The Marvel process is very thorough, and that’s why their results are so outstanding.  I’m confident Spider-Man will be no exception.  I’ve worked with a number of up-and-coming directors who have gone on to be superstars and believe that Jon is just such an outstanding talent.  For Spidey himself, we saw many terrific young actors, but Tom’s screen tests were special.   All in all, we are off to a roaring start.”

Feige commented, “As with James Gunn, Joss Whedon, and the Russo brothers, we love finding new and exciting voices to bring these characters to life.  We spent a lot of time with Jon and find his take and work inspiring.”

Pascal added, “Sony, Marvel, Kevin and I all knew that for Peter Parker, we had to find a vibrant, talented young actor capable of embodying one of the most well-known characters in the world.  With Tom, we’ve found the perfect actor to bring Spider-Man’s story into the Marvel Cinematic Universe.”

Sony Pictures will finance and release worldwide the next installment of the $4 billion Spider-Man franchise on July 28, 2017, in a film co-produced by Kevin Feige and his expert team at Marvel and Amy Pascal, who oversaw the franchise launch for the studio 13 years ago. Together, they will collaborate on a new creative direction for the Web-Slinger.

Spider-Man, embraced all over the world, is the most successful franchise in the history of Sony Pictures, with the five films having taken in more than $4 billion worldwide.”

Marvel,as per usual, is casting unknowns and will probably make them superstars. Its the Marvel magic. Also cheap. Very cheap.

Chiwetel Ejiofor Is A Baron In Dr. Strange

So a Baron and a Dr. walks into a bar…

baronmordo Strange

A bit late on this but it’s still cool news nonetheless: Chiwetel Ejiofor is expected to play Baron Mordo alongside Benedict Cumberbatch as Dr. Strange. Deadline has the report here.

According to the outlet, Baron Mordo will not be totally villainous. Just only slightly. One would expect jealous also since, in the original comics, Baron Mordo was also mentored under the Ancient One like Strange. Dr. Strange eventually become sorcerer supreme while Baron Mordo was exiled. He has been antagonizing Strange ever since.

Ejoifor is a wonderfully talented actor whom I have followed from Serenity (in which he portrayed the villain with a delicious cold calculation) Love Actually, Children of Men, and up to 12 Years A Slave. The man can act and I cannot wait to see him in Marvel’s Dr. Strange.

Dr. Strange will be a new genre for Marvel as it brings horror and magic to the cinematic universe. The comics were trippy as heck with demon dimensions, astral planes, unknown gods, and plenty of crazy magic. I am excited that Marvel is gambling with such a risk and I hope they go full crazy. Seeing things like this on screen would be totally awesome:

drstrangeweird

Kevin Feige has already said that Dr. Strange will be like Inception. I’m hoping it’s much weirder. And even horrific. Let it be STRANGE.
